Carmelo - most people know me as Indio I'm Puerto Rican and the 2nd of 9 children. I grew up in Paterson, NJ, a large city 20 miles east of New York City. We were poor and I saw no hope. Soon I was cutting school and at the age of 14 I joined the local hood gang. At 16 I became the leader of one of the most vicious and violent street gangs in New York City. I was proud to wear the title and colors of gold and black, however, I
found the title came with a price tag of either dying or going to jail. I was filled with hatred and fear. I was hated by my enemies and the police. I had to get high every day to live with this continuous hatred and fear. One day I was out on the streets without my protection and I found myself running for my life. of Kings– Jesus Christ. That night I heard how Jesus died for my sins. He took my place on the cross. For the first time in my life I saw hope. When I believed what I heard about Jesus was true – He set me free! The Bible says in John 8:36 “So if the Son set's you free, you will be free indeed.”
My street life ended many years ago. I have taken many twists and turns on my journey. However, when you take enough roads, you finally find the one home, again. When the Lord calls you, you can run, but you can't hide. The Lord has called me back to the streets to share my story and the teachings of Jesus Christ. The true life changing story belongs to Christ Jesus and what He can do in your life. That's why Street Gideon is here, to share the Good News of the Gospel with a lost and hurting world.
